Salary Range: $70,000 - $75,000 Annually

About Your Role
Cincinnati Public Radio is seeking an Assistant News Director who will serve as the afternoon lead in the news department. The Assistant News Director will work closely with the VP of News to develop and carry out news strategy and planning. Will also work closely with VP of Digital strategy and audience growth and will use these tools in daily digital editing. Will serve as back up News Director in News Director’s absence.
As Assistant News Director, you will play a central role in shaping Cincinnati Public Radio’s daily news coverage across broadcast digital platforms. This is a hands-on position responsible for guiding editorial decisions, making assignments, supporting reporters, and ensuring content meets the highest standards of accuracy, clarity, and impact.
What You'll Do
Edit and coordination of assignments from reporters especially in the afternoon, with occasional evening and weekend editing, as needed
Provide support and guidance for reporters, and assist with onboarding new hires
Create and maintain style guides
Serve as news director in their absence
Original reporting, as time allows
Handle WVXU submissions for awards
On call during breaking news events
Update the WVXU website throughout the day, also, edit reporters' stories for the web or assign others to do so.
Collaborate with newsroom staff to adapt stories for web using best practices
Training and assisting newsroom staff on best practices, as needed
Work with newsroom staff to adapt and create original content for the web
Prepare The Daily View newsletter for weekday distribution
Take on other projects and duties as assigned
What You'll Need to Get the Job Done
Desired Skills and Qualifications
Experience as a reporter or editor, management experience a bonus
Knowledge of SEO, digital media, social media, and other similar tools for digital-first writing
Strong organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple tasks and priorities
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail
Effective communication skills and an interest in working collaboratively to support staff and other departments through the organization
Ability to work both independently and as part of a diverse and creative team
Understanding of Cincinnati Public Radio’s programming and belief in Cincinnati Public Radio’s mission and vision
Work Environment
The essential functions of this position can be performed in a seated position
Duties require frequent use of a computer and other office equipment
The ability to occasionally move within the office
A reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license, to occasionally travel to and visit sources for news stories
